Cartridges
5,45x39mm – Soviet intermediate unitary centre-fire cartridge for small arms. It has been designed in early 1970th by the group of scientists under guidance of V.M. Sabelnikov: L.I. Bulavskaya, B.V. Semin, M.E. Fedorov, P.F. Sazonov, V.I. Volkov, V.A. Nikolaev, E.E. Zimin, P.S. Korolev. This cartridge has been accepted for armament in 1974.
Developers while designing of cartridge 5,45x39mm took into account the experience of American cartridge 5,56x45mm designing and usage in combat, therefore, in spite of lower power, the new cartridge turned out comparable by efficiency. Small-caliber bullet with high initial velocity provides high flatness of trajectory (comparatively with cartridge 7,62x39mm, distance of straight shot is prolonged for 100 meters), possess good enough penetrative power and considerable lethality effect. Low impulse of recoil in the moment of a shot has favourable influence on close grouping of shots and accuracy, by the way decrease of cartridge weight allows rifleman to increase portable ammunition (200 cartridges 7,62x39mm have the same weight as 300 cartridges 5,45x39mm).
